We Are The Shadows (Song for Wikileaks) New 2017 – Dark, Rhythmic Indie / Alternative Rock 80s Music

Here’s a new song, finished in April 2016.  We Are The Shadows is a dark, ghostly, hypnotic song about Wikileaks. Primary influences are Neil Young, Echo and the Bunnymen and The Doors. Type of music is indie / alternative rock / new wave / 80s. The song uses instruments such as the Tibetan Singing Bowl, Analog Pad and Synth Choir, Flanger Guitar, Ghostly Tambourine. Vocals washed in reverb and delay. You can hear more of my music at @ice-cutters.

Lyrics to ‘We Are The Shadows’

The Devil took to the bitstream
To extend his hold on power
He created laws and ignited wars from
Machiavelli’s crystal tower

But we are the shadows
Breaking the chains that bind
We are the shadows
Informing the open minds

The scheming words that are whispered
Are all captured in the system
Unknown eyes penetrate the lies
And they sing to those who listen

We are the shadows
Crashing the fairytale
For we are the shadows
Knowing that truth prevails

Lalala La etc

The cut of a million truths
Can stop the killing machine
It’s cloak turned to shredded rags
The nightmare fades to a dream

Instrumental

The Devils took to the bitstream
To extend their hold on power
They created laws and ignited wars from
Machiavelli’s crystal tower

We are the shadows
The checks and the balances
We are the shadows
We know where corruption is

Lalala La etc

The cut of a million truths
Can stop the killing machine
It’s cloak turned to shredded rags
And the nightmare fades to a dream

Lalala La etc end

Music Video for Andy Kaufman Lives by Ice Cutters

‘Andy Kaufman Lives’ is a song which I wrote about the rumour that Andy Kaufman faked his death. This film was made a submission for the Kapow Intergalactic Film Festival in October 2016. http://www.kapowiff.com/.

I read the book ‘Lost In The Funhouse’ by Bill Zehme as research for the music video. The exterior shots were recorded whilst on holiday in The Netherlands (at Duinrell Attraction Park, The Hague, Rotterdam). The vocal performance was recorded at home in Prestatyn, North Wales.

The video assumes that Andy Kaufman faked his death and has ventured on a trip into the underworld.

I try to convey the ‘ride’ of his performances by using shots of the attraction park as an analogy. Here is a list of some other concepts / imagery which went into the music video

Paying the ferryman: A vocal sequence with round gemstones covering my eyes. Symbol of the dead paying the ferryman to cross into the underworld. Kaufman died with his eyes wide open. The practice was used in Italy to force the eyelids closed as part of the custom. To fake his death, a handful of people would have needed paying off to keep quiet.
Smoke and Mirrors: Vocal performance recorded into a mirror. Candles being blown out leaving a brief smoke trail. The performer being trapped ‘inside the mirror’ at the end of the song.
The clown: A disguise which Kaufman considered using in his new life. A reference to ‘Fugly The Klown’, a character associated closely with the artist. This could be anyone, an imposter, the man himself, a friend, a hollywood actor. He is there to promote the rumour and pay tribute to the man.
The gun: Kaufman often used a gun as a prop, pretending to shoot himself in performance. Directed at the audience, to convey the unease which he wanted to subject them to.
Splash ride: The boat crashing into the water from the slide conveys rebirth and return. Sudden and unexpected.
The house of shadows: Used for the opening title. Part of the attraction park. A dark room with a flash, creating a burst of green light. Shadows are captured and held on the wall until the next burst. A symbol of being in the limelight, but lasting only until the next flash.
The cherub: A shot near the start of the video. A cherub urinating water in a semicircular direction at the public. Another analogy of Andy Kaufman’s relationship with the audience.
Rollercoaster sequence: Considers what life is like is like away from the limelight; that it is happy and fulfilling.
The album: ‘American Pie’ by Don McClean. Used in the background for the vocal performance. Thought of the lyric ‘The day the music died’. An analogy and a tribute to iconic artists who died tragically young. This was the album from my childhood. It made me want to become a musician.
Numbers on knuckles: I inked the numbers 2519 onto my knuckles, barely visible and used for some parts of the vocal performance. Reference to his home / house number in the early 80’s.
Baron von munchausen: At the end of the video, a shot of the Baron reciting ‘the red baron is my name, lying is my favourite game’. This indicates the uncertainty behind the rumour and the likelihood that we may never know the truth. Also considers ‘Munchausen by Proxy syndrome’. a condition where a person fakes the illness of someone in their custody, often to the extreme.

A song about freedom: 21st Century Blues (Alternative Rock / Psychedelic Indie Music)

Here’s a new song about freedom: 21st Century Blues (Alternative Rock / Psychedelic Indie Music)

21st Century Blues is a new song from the band Ice Cutters, recorded in July 2016. Influences: Pink Floyd, Scott Walker, Simon & Garfunkel, Spiritualized. Mood of music: Anthem, Epic, Mellow, Quiet to Loud, Psychedelic. Genre: Alternative Rock, Indie Rock. The song takes inspiration from Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of The Moon.

Lyrics to 21st Century Blues by Ice Cutters:

Beauty is throwing seduction in our eyes
Pleasure lives for a single breath in time
Never is vanity harmless
The people are working in darkness

Is power the hidden desire of everyone?
Should freedom be served in a room of loaded guns?
Why is a rarity treasured?
Their paying the workers with pleasure

We’ll get through the 21st century blues
We will lose the 21st century blues
Sometimes there is no peace in life
Everything moves too fast
Now you can think at last
Now you can truly stand
Life is no longer damned
Now you can truly stand
This is the perfect plan

We’ll get through the 21st century blues
We will lose the 21st centry blues

About ‘Lost Souls’ (Ice Cutters CD Album, 2016)

Lost Souls is a melodic, epic album with a nod to each of my main musical influences. It is inspired by the Island Records releases of the early 70’s. with influences including John Cale, Cat Stevens, Nick Drake, Brian Wilson / The Beach Boys, Marc Bolan / T-Rex, Duncan Browne, Al Stewart, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Big Star, The Velvet Underground & Nico, Gene Clark, The Byrds, Nirvana & REM. The centrepieces of the album are two songs about people – performance artist Andy Kaufman and ‘Gonzo’ artist Ralph Steadman. Ralph lived in my hometown of Abergele in his formative years, and I am a big fan of his artwork. The rumours about Andy Kaufman faking his own death, and the subsequent mystery played a big part in setting the tone and feel of the album.

Lyrics to ‘A Greek Tragedy’ by Ice Cutters

If I could help you, i’d throw my arms around you
Tell all the world i’ve found you, and bring you in from you the cold

If I could save you, I’d make all the princes crave you
They’ll throw all their wealth behind you
Then turn your waters to gold

It’s the time, it’s the time
To believe in what’s right
For our hope, and our health
Spread the Wealth, Spread the wealth

If I could build you, I’d take all the things that kill you
Then bring in the skills to give you
The chance to evolve

What of tomorrow? Why be the thief who borrowed
Pay all your debts with sorrow and thrive in what you make

It’s the time, it’s the time
To believe in what’s right
For our hope, and our health
Spread the Wealth, Spread the wealth

Instrumental

We all need to change (3)
Need to change

It’s the time, it’s the time
To believe in what’s right
For our hope, and our health
Spread the Wealth

Lyrics to ‘Lovers Isle’ by Ice Cutters:

we had a really good time today, babe
and i can see it all in your smile
we took the little one somewhere special
to a place called the lovers isle

Oh to be on the walk of pilgrims
Butterflies in the midday sun
With every step there’s a deeper beauty
Feel the knots as they come undone
undone

Love is like a fresco, by michaelangelo, in the touch
It feels like a countryside that Turner glorified, for that is Love

we are built on a rock eternal, two lights in a vivid storm
as the sea beats on the cliffside, the other side is still and calm
and just for a passing moment, we make castles in the virgin sand
playing chase with the tidal waters
gazing out and holding hands, this land
Love is like a fresco, by michaelangelo, in the touch
It feels like a countryside that Turner glorified, for that is Love
ahh-ring
Ooh it’s like a fresco, by michaelangelo, on lovers isle.

Breaking Up The Union – a song about Brexit, Britain’s vote to leave the European Union (EU)

Here is a song called ‘Breaking Up The Union’. It is a song about the British Referendum ‘Brexit’ vote to leave the European Union (EU). It looks at the consequences of sigificant changes in the political systems and how crucial it is to take it seriously and vote for whatever you believe in. The song was written in 2015 and is turning out to be quite prophetic as it considered the fall of Prime Minister David Cameron and the risk of the United Kingdom breaking up or remoulding itself into something new, akin to a United States of Britain. Style of music: Indie / Ambient / Alternative Pop with Folk Rock influences. Mood of music: relaxed, brooding, epic, chilled, meditative, rhythmic. The artists / bands who influenced the song include John Martyn, Scott Walker, Tim Hardin & Nick Drake.

Lyrics to ‘Breaking Up The Union’ by Ice Cutters:

Why worry if you’re left or right?
No decision can be black or white
They give you odds, but the outcome is certain
Every actor must prepare for the curtain
Minds open, and curtains are drawn
The King’s fate, delivered by Pawns
You make plans, and hope they will follow
How many times, can you make them swallow?
An Election broke up the Union (3)
Goodbye, Goodbye, Goodbye
Your palace is a pile of bricks
It’s magic in the way that it sticks
Grant pieces to the faraway people
It keeps them happy but the power is lethal
An Election broke up the Union (3)
Goodbye, Goodbye, Goodbye
Instrumental
I’m not saying it’s going to be bad
It’s not broken, but the feeling is sad
Scattered members of the family setup
Seek fortune in a federal getup
An Election broke up the Union (3)
Goodbye, Goodbye
Goodbye, Goodbye
Goodbye, Goodbye

A song about the artist Ralph Steadman (Here’s To You, Ralph Steadman)

Here’s song about Ralph Steadman, the artist & Hunter S Thompson collaborator. He lived in my home town of Abergele in his youth, and attended school there before going off to art school in London.Genre: Indie Pop, Retro, Alternative Rock, Psychedelic Pop.

The music is influenced by Smile & Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys / Brian Wilson, and is a tribute to both Ralph Steadman AND the late Carl Wilson. The opening chords borrow from Claire De Lune, if you can spot it. It blends Slide Guitar and a delayed pick guitar (the strokes of the artists brush). The song considers how the war and experiences in high school shaped Ralph’s fear and hatred of authority, which may in turn have fired his exceptional skill in Art. Mood of music: meditative, relaxed, chilled, mellow, spiritual.

Lyrics to ‘Here’s To You Ralph Steadman’ by Ice Cutters

World War was the trauma that brought renaissance back

Your trail led from Wirral to Wales when they attacked

With life on the edge of a knife creation bloomed

And inside of you, the conflict will always burn

You learned a trade, escaped the dungeon

Joined the swing of post-war London

Took a punch and ended up in New York

Sketching the rich and drawing the poor

Here’s to you, Ralph Steadman

To you, Ralph Steadman (3)

We all should tribute

The man who came from our town

Outside, the bullets and bombs and madness reigned

In School a tyrannical master did the same

With fear of authority planted in your soul

You take control of the fire that’s in your art

The place was right, and you got lucky

Drew the Derby in Kentucky

Brother Hunter said ‘Let’s go on a trip’

And what a trip, the life that you lived

Here’s to you Ralph Steadman

to you Ralph Steadman (3)

We all should tribute

The man who came from our town

Repeat Chorus

Closing Instrumental

Lyrics to ‘Andy Kaufman Lives’

You cannot die if your Andy Kaufman

A clown can’t smile when he wears the mask

The biggest joke never can be tasteful

What you don’t know, you’ll never have to ask

To love to live the life, it means to laugh

To love to live the life, it’s time to go

It drives you on, the pressure till its gone

A blissful emptiness will guide you through the days

When going back to the prematernal sack

The sleeping ecstasy can only be a phase

To brings the labour pain

You cannot hide if your Andy Kaufman

Unless your friends carry on the game

In 30 years people can forget you

How many more disappear from fame

To love to live the life it means to laugh (it’s all you need)

To feel the smile that hides behind the lie

This is it, your out of time

Raise the curtains, lock your eyes

On the moon, you stand alone

Come back to earth and join the show

To love to live the life, it means to laugh (it’s all you need)

To feel the smile that hides behind the lie

To love to live the life, it means to laugh (it’s all you need)

To love to live the life, it’s time to show

You cannot die if you’re Andy Kaufman

Ralph Steadman Song & Birthday Party

I recently wrote a song about iconic artist and Hunter S Thompson collaborator Ralph Steadman. He’s from my hometown, Abergele (via Wallasey). I sent the song to Ralph and his daughter asked me to perform it with my band Junebug and his birthday this year.  More details on the party at Kent Online. It was an honour! Here is the song:

New Christmas Song: Baby Don’t You Cry Too Much

Ice Cutters have written and recorded a new Christmas song for 2015 called ‘Baby Don’t You Cry Too Much’. The style of the music is 1950’s / 1960’s rock and roll. It is about a young child who is scared of Santa Claus!  I was influenced by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Dion and The Belmonts, Elvis, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry and Jackie Wilson. Here is a link to the track on Soundcloud. Hope you enjoy and Merry Christmas.
